MORE THAN JUST MARKETS by Abigail Donodyano

“Unto the least.” This quote from Care Channels, Inc. resonated with us and became the central focus of our Economics 11 field trip last April 27, 2026. As BS Agribusiness Economics students, we are often immersed in discussions about markets and business. However, our 8:00 AM jeepney ride to Davao Care Farm reminded us that as Iskolars ng Bayan, economics is really about the people.

During the visit, we observed how a social enterprise operates through a Holistic,

Innovative, Sustainable, and Empowering approach. What stood out most was Care Channelsโ€™ commitment to working in the poorest communities. Through this, we realized that, economics goes beyond profitโ€”it is also about improving lives and moving people from dependency toward dignity. The talk also strengthened our Iskolar ng Bayan spirits, reminding us of our responsibility to use our knowledge and skills in the service of others.

Another saying that stayed with us was the quote, โ€œWithout a successor, there is no success.โ€ This emphasized Care Channelsโ€™ strong focus on children and their belief in investing in the next generation as a path to long-term change. As students, this also encouraged us to reflect on our own roles and responsibilities in shaping the future.

One of the highlights of the trip was the farm tour. We explored the demo farm and saw how organic agriculture can function as a sustainable business operation. We also experienced parts of the farmโ€™s daily routine, including gathering fresh eggs from chickens. These simple yet meaningful activities gave us a deeper understanding of where our food comes from. In addition, purchasing their local products allowed us to directly support their programs that fund health and education initiatives.

Of course, the trip would not be complete without the buko halo-halo. We would like to thank Maโ€™am Gaya and all the staff of Davao Care Farm for making this experience possible. After a long morning under the sun, it served as a refreshing and well-appreciated treat.

Overall, our visit to Davao Care Farm went beyond observing how a farm operates. It became a meaningful experience that showed us how economics can also be a tool for service, compassion, and creating a positive impact in society.
