SOM continues its mission in providing extension services for inclusive development

The School of Management (SOM) is actively engaged in linking its research to its extension and public service engagements. Some of its activities builds on its research projects related to supply/value chain, marketing, and agribusiness management. It also uses its networks such as the Department of Agriculture (DA) and Vegetable Industry Council of Southern Mindanao (VICSMIN) for dissemination, intervention, capacity building, technical assistance, and related activities.

On March 20-21, 2025, in celebration of the UPMin’s 30th anniversary, SOM collaborated with the DA XI and VICSMIN to organize the 2-day Ika-10 na Tabo sa UP Mindanao. Tabo or Taboan is a Visayan term which means to sell fresh produce. Through the DA’s KADIWA program, exhibitors included Calinan RIC Federation, VICSMIN farmers, MAGSIGE MPC, Mahalyang Vegetables and Fruits Farmers Consumers Cooperative, Rosario’s Delicacies, Anisa Vinegar, Raizza’s Dried Fish Trading, Izzy’s Café, Biao Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (BARBCO) and Macatabo Farm. They did not only sell fresh but also processed products.

One of the objectives of the Tabo was advocating for marketing and consumption of locally produced products through direct farm-to-consumer food supply chain. In addition, the goal was also to encourage volunteerism of students and train them to handling similar engagements in the future.  The students, through the Society of Agribusiness Economists and the SOM University Council were on-board with this event as co-organizers and functioning onsite helpdesk.

The success of the 2-day farmer’s market was not made possible if not for the UP Mindanao community who supported our local farmers and entrepreneurs.  Initial information from DA XI, through its Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division (AMAD), revealed an estimated ₱50,000.00 in gross sales for 2 days. Daghang kaayong salamat!
